Damped Oscillators within the General Theory of Casimir and van der Waals Forces

چکیده

It is demonstrated that the general theory of Casimir and van der Waals forces describes interaction-induced equilibrium thermodynamic potentials damped harmonic oscillator bilinearly coupled to environment. An extended model for a suggested along lines forces, corresponding quantities obtained. While original involves heat bath consisting large number free oscillators having infinitesimal damping functions, allows any generally admissible frequency temperature dependent dissipative susceptibilities constituents, influenced by additional environmental channels are not directly linked system oscillator. Consequently, results obtained applicable function

van der Waals forces in density functional theory :

A density functional theory (DFT) that accounts for van der Waals (vdW) interactions in condensed matter, materials physics, chemistry, and biology is reviewed. The insights that led to the construction of the Rutgers–Chalmers van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) are presented with the aim of giving a historical perspective, while also emphasizing more recent efforts which have sought to i...

Dynamic van der Waals theory.

We present a dynamic van der Waals theory starting with entropy and energy functional with gradient contributions. The resultant hydrodynamic equations contain the stress arising from the density gradient. It provides a general scheme of two-phase hydrodynamics involving the gas-liquid transition in nonuniform temperature. Some complex hydrodynamic processes with evaporation and condensation ar...

Electromagnetic Eigenmodes in Matter. Van Der Waals-london and Casimir Forces

We derive van der Waals-London and Casimir forces by calculating the eigenmodes of the electromagnetic field interacting with two semi-infinite bodies (two halves of space) with parallel surfaces separated by distance d. We adopt simple models for metals and dielectrics, well-known in the elementary theory of dispersion. In the non-retarded (Coulomb) limit we get a d−3-force (van der Waals-Lond...

Repulsive Casimir and Van Der Waals Forces: from Measurements to Future Technologies

By engineering the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields between material interfaces, one can dramatically change the Casimir-Lifshitz force between surfaces as a result of the modified zero-point energy density of the system. Repulsive interactions between macroscopic bodies occur when their dielectric responses obey a particular inequality, as pointed out by Dzyaloshinskii, Lifshitz, ...

van der Waals forces influencing adhesion of cells.

Adhesion molecules, often thought to be acting by a 'lock and key' mechanism, have been thought to control the adhesion of cells. While there is no doubt that a coating of adhesion molecules such as fibronectin on a surface affects cell adhesion, this paper aims to show that such surface contamination is only one factor in the equation. Starting from the baseline idea that van der Waals force i...
